Every Child’s Swim Journey Is Different; Celebrate the Progress

Written by Watch Me Swim, a UK based company

Learning to swim is a journey.
For some children, progress can happen quickly. For others, learning a new skill can take weeks, months or even longer. Every child is different, and that’s something we believe should be celebrated — not compared.

At Watch Me Swimming Awards, we are passionate about recognising the individual achievements that children make in the water, while also promoting positive education around water safety.

Swimming is about more than reaching the next level

Traditional swimming awards often involve working through a long list of skills or completing a set number of milestones. While this approach works well for some children, it doesn't work for everyone.

For some children, a long list of things they need to achieve can feel overwhelming. For others, particular targets may feel out of reach because of their individual circumstances, confidence, learning needs or physical abilities.

We believe there is another way.

Rather than focusing on everything a child hasn't achieved yet, why not celebrate what they have achieved today?

One skill. One achievement. A reason to feel proud.

Our milestone awards focus on one specific aquatic skill at a time.

That might be something that looks small to an experienced swimmer but represents a huge personal achievement for a particular child.

Perhaps they've put their face in the water for the first time. Maybe they've learned to float independently, developed the confidence to jump into the pool or mastered a new movement they've been practising for months.

Whatever the achievement, it matters.

And when a child receives a certificate or badge recognising that achievement, it can provide something incredibly valuable: a sense of pride in how far they've come.

Celebrating progress, not comparison

Every child learns differently.

Some children may confidently move through swimming skills, while others need more time, encouragement and repetition. Some may face barriers that mean certain traditional swimming targets aren't appropriate or achievable for them.

That shouldn't mean their achievements go unrecognised.

We want swimming awards to be something that motivates children rather than makes them feel that they aren't good enough.

That's why our awards are designed to recognise individual progress and effort.

The skill itself is important, but so is the journey behind it.

The determination to try again.

The courage to overcome a fear.

The confidence to attempt something new.

The perseverance to keep practising.

These are achievements worth celebrating.

Inclusion is at the heart of what we do

We are committed to being a fully inclusive swimming award provider.

For us, inclusion means making sure every child has opportunities to experience success and recognition in the swimming environment.

Children shouldn't have to fit into one particular mould to be celebrated.

Instead, awards can be used to recognise the skills and achievements that are meaningful for each individual child.

Because there is no single definition of swimming success.

For one child, success might be swimming a length. For another, it might be confidently entering the water. For someone else, it could be developing an important water-safety skill.

Every achievement has value.

Building confidence and water safety

Swimming awards aren't just about collecting badges and certificates.
We also believe strongly in the importance of positive education around water.
Developing aquatic skills can help children become more confident and capable in the water, while learning about water safety can give them knowledge that could one day be incredibly important.

By celebrating progress along the way, we can help create positive experiences around swimming and encourage children to keep learning.

Every child deserves a reason to feel proud

At Watch Me Swimming Awards, our aim is simple: to help every child find something they can achieve, work towards and feel proud of.

It might take a day.

It might take several weeks.

It might take months.

The amount of time it takes doesn't make the achievement any less important.

In fact, sometimes the achievements that take the most time, patience and determination are the ones that deserve to be celebrated most.

Swimming isn't a race, and every child's journey will look different.

That's why we're proud to celebrate every achievement, every step forward and every reason for a child to say: "I did it!"
