Game Instructions: Fishy in a Basket

Fishy in a Basket

A fun, social water game that builds confidence while encouraging bubble blowing and underwater movement.

Recommended for ages 3+

Game Overview

  • Best played with at least 4 people (3 to form the basket, 1 fishy in the middle).
  • Works well in chest-deep water for the youngest child participating.
  • Great for family play, small groups, or inviting new friends at the pool.

How to Play

1. Form the Basket

  • Have 3 or more people stand in a circle and hold hands.
  • One child stands in the center—this is the “fishy.”
  • The group holds hands to “trap” the fishy inside the basket.

2. Sing Together

  • While rotating slowly in a circle, sing: “Fishy in a basket, fishy in a basket, how you gonna get out? How you gonna get out?”

3. Time for the Escape

  • When the song ends, the fishy escapes by either one of the following:
    • Blowing bubbles in the center of the basket
    • Swimming underwater and slipping under the arms of the group
(Choose whichever option fits the child’s skill level.)

4. Repeat and Rotate

  • Choose a new fishy and play again!

This game is a great way to include other kids or families at the pool.
